xavier bettel and franz fayot acqusition of supercomputer luxembourgish meluxina

Press release: Xavier Bettel and Franz Fayot made the announcement

On 28 September 2020, the contract for the acquisition of the supercomputer from the French company Atos by LuxProvide was signed together with EuroHPC.

At a press conference on 29 September 2020, Prime Minister, Minister of State Xavier Bettel and Minister of Economy Franz Fayot, together with EuroHPC Executive Director Anders Jensen and LuxProvide management, presented the progress of the Luxembourg supercomputer project that integrates the European supercomputer network.

The Grand-Duchy-based EuroHPC Joint Undertaking is an initiative co-funded by the European Commission and 32 countries, including Luxembourg, to develop a supercomputing ecosystem and infrastructure in Europe. The MeluXina project for a Luxembourg petascale supercomputer, which is to be implemented by LuxProvide at the LuxConnect Data Center in Bissen, was selected by EuroHPC in 2019 to integrate a European network of supercomputers and benefit from around 35% co-funding.

With a computational power of 10 petaflops (equivalent to 10,000,000,000,000 computational operations) per second, the Luxembourg supercomputer MeluXina is designed to meet the needs of enterprises, especially SMEs and start-ups: a facility which is unique within the European supercomputer network. Its modular architecture allows it to be used in different fields of activity and for different applications. In this way, it can provide optimum support for the digitalisation and innovation projects of Luxembourg companies for applications in the fields of modelling, research, new product development, forecasting and big data.
